A Deeper Understanding of Sequitta Banks, Esq.

Although it may seem like she only represents families when you first meet her, her innermost reasoning for it is far more profound than that. Born on September 21, 1975, was Sequitta M. Banks. Mrs. Banks lived in Saint Mary’s County Maryland, but moved with her mother to the District of Columbia when she was only 3. There, she was raised in a slightly poverty-stricken household, along with her two little half-sisters, and little half-brother. Mrs. Banks had a traumatic childhood because her mother was not always there for her, thus causing her to be put into houses with families she didn’t even know, where she had to take care of her 3 half-siblings all alone, at such a young age. However, at the age of 12 years old, Mrs. Banks vowed she would be a lawyer to try and save children that were living in an abusive household, or one where they weren’t being treated well, so that they would never have to live the way she did.

In elementary and middle school, Mrs. Banks managed to get excellent grades, and in high school, she graduated in political science from George Washington High. She went to UCLA for law school and learned the basics of history and social studies. A bright smile appears on Mrs. Banks’ face when remembering her time at UCLA and GW, as her “favorite classes pretty much were literature and history.” Moreover, Mrs. Banks often reminisces about her experience in UCLA, as she “was taught the basics of becoming a law attorney by some famous professors.”

In 2000, Mrs. Banks finished her study of law, and was officially appointed as a lawyer. Currently, Mrs. Banks is proudly working in her very own law firm, named “B&B Law,” in Fairfax. When asked about who she currently represents, a serious look crosses Mrs. Banks’ face, as she explains how she “[finds herself] representing more men than women in these situations,” since “men come to [her] because they believe that they are going to be mistreated in the legal system because they’re men. And [she has] a reputation now of being successful with the difficult cases where men are winning custody of their children.” Indeed, Mrs. Banks feels successful in her reputation, because there is a calm and accomplished tone in her voice when asked how many awards/diplomas she has: “Well, I have a bachelor in arts, and a juris doctorate at JD. I have some awards based on my advocacy as a family law attorney in the state of Virginia, and for being a Guardian ad Litem for the court system.”

In her personal family life, Mrs. Banks is currently divorced to her ex-husband, Robert Banks, whom she had been married to for 18 years and had two girls together with. Mrs. Banks shows strong enthusiasm for being a family law attorney, as she “can’t imagine not being a family law attorney,” and plans to continue being one for a while, as she sees herself retiring around 62, or 65 years old. Unlike some of her colleagues, Mrs. Banks would like to retire at an earlier age, so that she can “enjoy life, and freely do things without a busy work schedule.” And even though she lived through a rocky start with her childhood and adolescence, she was still able to get back up, and fight for what she wanted to do for herself, and her career. Ultimately, Mrs. Banks feels she was “lucky enough that after 12 years of practicing law as general counsel for a school system, the [B&B Law] firm is still successful to this day and has grown substantially.”
